Penrith North Lakes
Penrith has been named the number one destination for British staycationers travelling by train, reflecting a growing trend towards the area’s commitment to sustainable travel.
Data from Virgin Trains Ticketing has revealed the number of people taking the train to Penrith (North Lakes), which Avanti West Coast serves along with TransPennine Express, has increased by 106 per cent in the last six weeks.
Hideaway Cottage, Penrith is the ideal base to visit the Lakes, with great bus connections to Pooley Bridge, Ullswater, Bowness, Windermere and Keswick as well as over to the west coast. Bus fares are currently capped at just £2.00 per journey.
However we are not just a base for visiting the North Lakes, we also have the Eden Valley and the Yorkshire Dales on our doorstep, and the best way of seeing both is a trip on the Settle  - Carlisle Railway.

Settle Carlisle Railway
Voted the best scenic railway in Europe by travel publishers Lonely Planet, the Settle - Carlisle railway has a station at Langwathby just four miles from Hideaway Cottage.
You can journey to Carlisle through the beautiful Eden Valley or head for Settle, through the Yorkshire Dales and over the famous Ribblehead Viaduct or travel a little further to Skipton and take a walk along the canal or visit the castle. The Settle to Carlisle line was the last main railway in Britain to be constructed primarily with manual labour and on 1 May 1876, the Settle–Carlisle line was opened for passenger services.
You can also take a short trip to Carlisle from Penrith station and join the line from there.
Just make sure you get the last train back :)
Occasionally steam trains travel the line but the trains are generally diesel hauled.
